    Selection of a Realistic Viscous Vortex Tangential Velocity Profile for Computer Simulation of Vortex-Structure Interaction

    Structure loading by vortices is a relevant phenomenon in numerous fields of engineering significance. Computer modelling is a powerful tool that can be used to study the loading produced on structures by impacting vortices. Realistic simulation of vortex-loading of structures necessitates the use of a realistic vortex tangential velocity profile (TVP). The present study compiles measured TVPs from various types of experimentally-produced vortices as well as real-world tornado and hurricane vortices. The measured TVPs are compared with commonly-used, analytical TVPs. Analytical TVPs that realistically represent the range of measured TVPs are identified and selected for use in future computer simulation studies

    Technology mapping and adoption behaviour for sugarcane protection technologies by Dharmapuri District Sugarcane growers

    Sugarcane is the second most important industrial crop in the country occupying about 5 million hectares of area with the production of 376.9 mt.  Although more than 40% of the cane area in the country is in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu ranks first in productivity of sugarcane. Even though Tamil Nadu is in higher productivity zone, the average farm level potential yield was very less which leads lot of scope for increasing production in Tamil Nadu. Sugarcane farmers from Tamil Nadu ranged from small to large. All the farmers not following all the recommended practices. Hence, a study is required to analyses the predominant technologies in the particular area and adoption behavior of the farmers to bridge the technological gap. With that idea in mind, a study has been taken up with the objectives that to document the technological mapping and to study the adoption behavior of sugarcane farmers at Subaramani Siva Co-operative Sugar Mill area in Dharmapui district of Tamil Nadu state. From Dharmapuri districts seven blocks were selected. From each block ten respondents were selected; thus 70 respondents were constituted for the study. The Study revealed that all the blocks are not similar in case of technologies, the predominant technologies are differing block to block. Adoption pattern for protection technologies reveled that integrated weed management was adopted by majority of the respondent. The technologies ‘pheromone trap’ and ‘soil trenching of recommended termiticides’ are not at all adopted by the respondents in the study area

    Iron bioavailability of sweet potato and moringa leaves in comparision with leafy green vegetables commonly consumed in Ghana

    Introduction: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is a significant public health problem in Northern Ghana especially amongst women and children. Leafy green vegetables are major contributors to iron intake in this part of the world; poor iron bioavailability from these food sources may be part of the reason for the high prevalence of IDA. Evidence suggests that sweet potato and Moringa leaves might be better sources of bioavailable iron, compared with other leafy green vegetables, as both have high levels of iron, and also beta−carotene − a dietary factor that has been suggested to improve iron bioavailability. Aims/Hypothesis: Our research aims were to evaluate iron bioavailability of sweet potato and Moringa leaves in comparison with other leafy green vegetables commonly consumed in Ghana. We hypothesized that iron uptake from sweet potato and Moringa leaves would be higher compared with the other tested vegetables. Methods: We used the Caco−2 cell/in vitro digestion system; Caco−2 cell ferritin formation was used as a surrogate marker of iron bioavailability. In addition, we also measured levels of other nutrients and dietary factors known to affect iron bioavailability: beta−carotene, iron, calcium, zinc, ascorbate, phytates and polyphenols. Results: Iron bioavailability from all tested vegetables was poor despite relatively high absolute levels of iron in the leaf samples (14.5 − 24.6 mg/100 grams dry weight); there was no statistically significant difference in iron uptake between any of the tested varieties or the control sample with no added iron. Levels of phytates and polyphenols, known inhibitors of iron uptake, were high and probably accounted for the low iron bioavailability of tested leaves. As expected, beta−carotene levels were highest in the sweet potato and Moringa leaves (ranging from 47−98 micrograms retinol activity equivalent)/gram freeze dried leaf) − approximately 100% more compared with the other leafy green vegetables, with the exception of the purple leafed sweet potato variety tested that had approximately the same amount of beta−carotene as the commonly consumed vegetables. Conclusion: In our in vitro model neither sweet potato nor Moringa leaves demonstrated good iron bioavailability suggesting that increased consumption of these vegetables would not lead to improved iron status. However, both leaves were good sources of beta−carotene, and further testing in vivo to evaluate whether they could impact on vitamin A status may be warranted

    Delay in diagnosis of breast cancer in a developing country: a single centre observational study in a tertiary care hospital in North Kerala, India

    Background: Around the world breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. In India, peak incidence is between 45-50 years of age. Early diagnosis improves survival, hence reducing diagnostic delay in breast cancer will have major social and economic implications besides improving the quality of life. This observational study aims to decipher various factors influencing diagnostic delay so that early treatment can be instituted.Methods: We interviewed 212 consecutive patients who attended the twice weekly breast clinic conducted by Department of general surgery and department of radiotherapy, government medical college, Kozhikode between September 2014 and February 2015. All patients with primary breast cancer were included in the study. Exclusion criteria included recurrence, second primaries, history of partial treatment and incomplete records. Finally, we interviewed 202 patients with the help of a pretested semi-structured questionnaire.Results: In present study, the commonest age group was 40-50 years with 62.4% participants presenting with early breast cancer and 37.6% having advanced breast cancer. Most of present study subjects were educated up to high school and unemployed. Awareness about breast cancer was 74.25% but many were ignorant of its symptomatology. Practice of breast self-examination (BSE) was low at 32.1%. Side and quadrant were statistically significant factor.Conclusions: In present study religion, educational status, marital status, breast cancer awareness, practice of BSE and location of tumor were statistically significant factors influencing delay in diagnosis. There was a general lack of knowledge about the importance of self-examination in breast cancer which needs health education and need for active social propaganda in print and electronic media regarding its importance. In future institution of a screening programme will hasten diagnosis and improve survival of breast cancer patients

    Neuropilin 1 Involvement in Choroidal and Retinal Neovascularisation

    Purpose Inhibiting VEGF is the gold standard treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It is also effective in preventing retinal oedema and neovascularisation (NV) in diabetic retinopathy (DR) and retinal vein occlusions (RVO). Neuropilin 1 (Nrp1) is a co-receptor for VEGF and many other growth factors, and therefore a possible alternative drug target in intra ocular neovascular disease. Here we assessed choroidal and retinal NV in an inducible, endothelial specific knock out model for Nrp1. Methods Crossing Nrp1 floxed mice with Pdgfb-CreERT2 mice produced tamoxifen-inducible, endothelial specific Nrp1 knock out mice (Nrp1ΔEC) and Cre-negative, control littermates. Cre-recombinase activity was confirmed in the Ai3(RCL-EYFP) reporter strain. Animals were subjected to laser-induced CNV (532 nm) and spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was performed immediately after laser and at day 7. Fluorescein angiography (FA) evaluated leakage and postmortem lectin staining in flat mounted RPE/choroid complexes was also used to measure CNV. Furthermore, retinal neovascularisation in the oxygen induced retinopathy (OIR) model was assessed by immunohistochemistry in retinal flatmounts. Results In vivo FA, OCT and post-mortem lectin staining showed a statistically significant reduction in leakage (p<0.05), CNV volume (p<0.05) and CNV area (p<0.05) in the Nrp1ΔEC mice compared to their Cre-negative littermates. Also the OIR model showed reduced retinal NV in the mutant animals compared to wild types (p<0.001). Conclusion We have demonstrated reduced choroidal and retinal NV in animals that lack endothelial Nrp1, confirming a role of Nrp1 in those processes. Therefore, Nrp1 may be a promising drug target for neovascular diseases in the eye

    Microstructure and mechanical characterization of in situ synthesized AA6061/(TiB2+Al2O3) hybrid aluminum matrix composites

    Abstract: TiB2 and Al2O3 particulates reinforced AA6061 aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) were synthesized by in-situ reaction of titanium (Ti) and boric acid (H3BO3) powders with molten aluminum. AMCs were fabricated using an electric stir casting furnace under a controlled environment. Heat flow curves of differential thermal analysis (DTA) showed that the synthesis temperature for the formation of TiB2 and Al2O3 using Al-Ti-H3BO3 reaction system was 950°C. The in-situ synthesized composites were characterized using XRD, FESEM, TEM and EBSD. XRD results revealed the formation of TiB2 and Al2O3 particulates in the composite. FESEM micrographs revealed a homogenous distribution of both the particulates with good interfacial bonding. EBSD maps showed that the in-situ formed TiB2 and Al2O3 particulates refined the grains of the aluminum matrix from 103 μm at 0 wt.% to 14 μm at 15 wt.%. Al2O3 particles exhibited spherical shape while TiB2 particles displayed hexagonal and cubic shapes. The formation of ultrafine and nano scale thermodynamically stable TiB2 and Al2O3 particles enhanced the microhardness and the tensile strength of the 2 AMCs. The microhardness and the tensile strength were respectively 122 HV and 287 MPa at 15 wt.%

    Mass Spectrometry-based Sequencing of Venom Peptides (Conotoxins) from Vermivorous Cone Snail, Conus Loroisii: Toxicity of its Natural Venom

    Conus loroisii is a marine vermivorous snail found profusely in the southern seas of India. They harbor several toxic peptide components commonly called as ‘conotoxins’. In this study, we have identified and sequenced five conotoxins using proteome based tandem mass spectrometry analysis through Data analysis 4.1 software. Among them, we found Lo959 as contryphan which is previously described. All other conotoxins Lo1702, Lo1410, Lo1385 and Lo1686 belong to M-Superfamily conotoxins and novel to C. loroisii. Lo1410 is completely novel to conotoxin research with 3 disulfides and the amino acid sequence is derived as CCSTNCAVCIPCCP. All the identified M-Superfamily conotoxins are sub categorised to mini M2 superfamily conotoxins. Lo1702 and Lo1686 possess C- terminal amidation which is the key feature in conotoxins.     Agricultural bio-waste recycling through efficient microbial consortia

    In India and other countries, rice straw, a byproduct of rice production, is burned in enormous amounts, which contributes to environmental pollution and climate change by releasing greenhouse gases viz., CO2, N2O, CH4, into the atmosphere. This study aimed to accelerate the degradation of this enormous amount of agricultural biomass via microbial inoculants. Four treatments—rice straw (RS), rice straw plus water (RSW), rice straw plus water plus Pusa decomposer (RSWF), and rice straw plus water plus Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) biomineralizer (RSWB) were used in the current investigation. The study's findings demonstrated that rice straw treated with microorganisms decomposed more quickly than RS and RSW treatments. According to EDAX spectra of elemental composition, the carbon content of rice straw in the RS, RSW, RSWF, and RSWB treatments was 33.66%, 29.75%, 13.33%, and 20.65% w/w, respectively. The RSWF treatment of rice straw was found to have the highest nitrogen concentration (0.64% w/w), followed by RSWB (0.61% w/w), RSW (0.45%) w/w, and RS (0.43% w/w). Treatments RSWF and RSWB had lower C/N ratios 20.83, and 33.85, respectively, than that RSW (66.11) and RS (78.28). The RSWF and RSWB treatments' porous, distorted, and rough surface structures provided further evidence that both microbial consortia could decompose rice straw more quickly than the RSW and RS treatments. Therefore, the results of this study imply that rice straw could be added to the soil to improve soil fertility for sustainable crop production rather than being burned
